AI-Powered Counterfeit Detection for Syngenta
Counterfeit agricultural products were entering Syngenta's supply chain — a problem with direct consequences for growers, brand reputation, and financial performance. [x]cube LABS built an AI-powered barcode tracking platform that flags counterfeits in real time, at every point in the chain.
The Challenge
Counterfeit Products in the Supply Chain: Invisible and Costly
The trade of counterfeit agricultural products is one of the most persistent and damaging problems in the global agribusiness industry. For Syngenta, the stakes were significant: counterfeit products entering the supply chain created vulnerability to financial losses, damaged growers who purchased ineffective substitutes, introduced inventory management complexity, degraded the quality of performance data, and posed a direct risk to brand value built over decades.
The core challenge was visibility. Without a way to track every product through every stage of the supply chain, there was no reliable method to identify where counterfeits were entering, let alone to flag them before they reached the end customer.
A counterfeit product in a farmer's hands doesn't just fail to work. It damages trust in a brand that millions of growers depend on.
The Solution
A Barcode Scanning Platform Built Around Supply Chain Intelligence
The [x]cube LABS team designed and built a barcode scanning application and web portal that gives Syngenta the ability to track every product through every stage of the supply chain. Users scan barcodes at each checkpoint — distributor, retailer, field agent — and the application records the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), timestamp, GPS coordinates, and address of the scanning location.
The platform is integrated with Syngenta's SAP database, which updates scan counts and status in real time. The system uses scan count probability modeling to identify risk: products that have been scanned more times than expected, or in unexpected locations, are flagged for investigation. Users can add comments at each scan to document status and share additional context with the Syngenta team.
Barcode Scanning Mobile App
A field-ready mobile application enabling authorized users to scan product barcodes at any point in the supply chain, capturing GTIN, timestamp, and GPS location automatically.
Supply Chain Web Portal
A centralized dashboard providing Syngenta's operations team with a full view of product movement, scan history, and flagged anomalies across the global supply chain.
Scan Count Probability Modeling
Products are scanned approximately three times through a normal distribution journey. The system identifies and flags products whose scan patterns deviate from expected probability, indicating potential counterfeiting.
SAP Integration
Real-time integration with Syngenta's existing SAP database, ensuring scan data is immediately reflected in enterprise systems without manual data entry.
Investigation Reporting
Users can report flagged products directly to the Syngenta team from within the app, with full scan history and location data attached automatically.
The Outcome
Counterfeit Risk Reduced. Supply Chain Trust Restored.
The platform gave Syngenta an operational capability they had never had before: real-time visibility into where their products were, at every stage of the journey. The ability to flag anomalies immediately transformed the company's response time to counterfeit activity from weeks to hours.
Reduced Business Losses
Earlier detection of counterfeit entry points directly reduced the financial losses associated with counterfeit products in the supply chain.
Protected Grower Outcomes
Farmers received genuine products backed by Syngenta's quality guarantee, restoring confidence in the brand at the point of use.
Improved Inventory Accuracy
Real-time tracking data improved the quality and reliability of inventory management and performance reporting across the supply chain.
Brand Value Protected
A visible, verifiable anti-counterfeiting system reinforced Syngenta's commitment to product integrity with distributors, retailers, and growers.
