IoT Safety Monitoring App and Web Portal for Molex
Molex had IoT safety detector devices installed in gas stations across 40+ countries, but no way to manage them remotely. [x]cube LABS built an end-to-end connected platform that puts full device control, alarm monitoring, and firmware management in a single mobile app and web portal.
The Challenge
Thousands of Safety Devices. Zero Remote Visibility.
Molex's IoT detector devices installed in gas stations perform a critical safety function: monitoring for gas leaks and other hazardous conditions in real time. But managing these devices across a global install base — checking their status, running safety tests, receiving alarm data, and updating firmware — required on-site visits. For a network spanning 40+ countries, that was operationally unsustainable.
The company needed a platform that would let their teams and their customers manage the full lifecycle of every connected device from a single interface, without ever leaving the office. The platform had to handle Bluetooth device communication, safety test execution, real-time alarm delivery, and remote firmware deployment, all in a secure and reliable way.
A gas station safety device that requires a site visit to check is not a connected product. It's a liability.
The Solution
An End-to-End IoT Platform Built for Industrial Safety Management
The [x]cube LABS team designed and built a fully connected IoT platform consisting of a mobile application and a web portal, giving Molex and their customers complete visibility and control over every device in the field. The mobile app uses Bluetooth to communicate with detectors directly, enabling real-time data retrieval and on-site management. The web portal provides a centralized dashboard for monitoring the entire device estate remotely.
The platform was built with the rigorous reliability requirements of industrial safety applications in mind: real-time alarm data, configurable alert thresholds, and over-the-air firmware updates that keep every device current without manual intervention.
Bluetooth Device Connectivity
The mobile app connects wirelessly to Molex IoT detectors via Bluetooth, enabling real-time data retrieval and device interaction without physical wiring.
Safety Test Execution
Bump tests and calibration tests can be initiated and completed directly from the mobile app, confirming device accuracy and readiness without specialist tools.
Real-Time Alarm Monitoring
Alarm data from devices (gas detection events, sensor failures, threshold breaches) is received and displayed immediately in the app and web portal.
Remote Firmware Updates
Over-the-air firmware deployment keeps every device in the field current with the latest security patches and performance improvements, without requiring on-site visits.
Centralized Web Portal
A comprehensive dashboard providing fleet-wide visibility: device status, alarm history, test results, firmware versions, and location data — accessible from any browser.
The Outcome
Full Device Fleet Control: From Anywhere.
The platform gave Molex and their customers a level of operational control over their device estate that was not previously possible. On-site visits for routine checks and firmware updates were eliminated. Alarm response times improved as events were surfaced immediately rather than discovered during scheduled inspections.
Remote Management at Global Scale
Device management across 40+ countries is now handled from a single platform, without the cost and delay of physical site visits.
Faster Alarm Response
Real-time alarm delivery means safety events are acted on immediately, not discovered days later during scheduled maintenance.
Eliminated On-Site Firmware Visits
Over-the-air updates keep every device current without dispatching technicians, reducing maintenance cost and improving device security.
Verified Device Accuracy
Regular bump and calibration tests run directly from the mobile app give operators confidence that every device is performing to specification.
