THE NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL SIGNAGE SOLUTION

Leveraging our disruptive innovation approach and results driven engineering, we helped NanoLumens set a new mark in the Digital Signage space by delivering a state-of-the-art display interface unit which brings together the latest in digital display technology and content management systems to provide immersive experiences to the customers.

Here's how we helped NanoLumens leverage IoT to build a connected digital signage solution

BACKGROUND

NanoLumens is a leading display solutions provider. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the company is engaged in development of unique flexible and fixed large-format LED display solutions. Realizing that the evolution of new digital technologies like mobile, social, cloud and the Internet of Things etc., creates new opportunities and possibilities in the digital signage market, NanoLumens partnered with [x]cube LABS to develop a new Digital Interface Unit (DIU) and bring in advanced features and capabilities to its product portfolio.

The DIU is central to the Digital Signage system wherein you can manage content, control the display and connect it with other devices. The existing DIU runs on a Windows OS with a tenure installed in it. However, it suffers from few limitations in controlling the display, content management and diagnostics. NanoLumens wanted to address the limitations by leveraging new technologies especially Beacon integration and social media enablement, in addition to empowering its display solutions with a new set of capabilities like remote control of the DIU, remote content management as per requirements and remote diagnostics so as to make it easy for its clients to manage the displays, facilitate easy content management and improve engagement experiences.

KEY FEATURES

Beacon integration:It allows restaurants, retail stores and other facilities to integrate beacons installed in their facilities with the display so as to showcase custom messages and content to customer. So whenever a customer enters a restaurant, the beacon captures the entry and creates an event and then allows the facility owner to showcase customized content- welcome greetings, ads based on his past shopping history, deals & coupons etc.

Multi-screen displays:The display screen can be split into various dimensions based on requirements. You can have 4 splits, 2 splits and even 3 split screen display. You can also control the way screen should split-up. Example- Suppose the display is installed in a restaurant. Now the screen can be split into 3 or 4 screens-one to showcase ads, 2nd to showcase menu and third to display information of customer interest like weather, breaking news, sports scores etc.

Remote controlling the hardware: Remote controlling the hardware: You can control the video display and collect the parameters of each display. You can remotely test if the display working is fine.

Remote Content Management: You can log into the dashboard, split the screens and then select videos to be played on each screen. You could also create sequences for content for each display like for Screen 1- first play video 1 then video 2 then video 3 etc.

Social Media Integrations: You can also connect to various social media channels wherein you can showcase tweets, posts and content on the display screen. The display will be superimposed by a bar wherein the social media content can be displayed.

Diagnostics: Remote collection of critical data like operating temperature, voltage, signal status etc., to facilitate quick trouble shooting.

CHALLENGES

Our initial project analysis suggested that just building an app would not address the limitations and bring-in new features to the Digital Signage system. It was necessary to create a new hardware with added capabilities which would replace the existing DIU. The next challenge was to find an ideal processing platform that would successfully meet the client requirements. The previous DIU was running on Windows platform

wherein the Windows logo would appear in the display. NanoLumens wanted to build a customized DIU without any third-party logo visibility. Designing the UI was also challenging as there was only one screen and this has to be used to give access to all features as well as to be used as display.

STRATEGY

Considering all the factors, we decided to use Android as the processing platform. We customized the Android OS by making changes to the code as per our requirements which involved lots of UI modifications and drill down to the extent of changing the boot sequence. How does a device boot? What an all components should be considered for booting? Considering that it will be integrated with beacons and there will be continuous data transfer across the system, we worked on building a robust security mechanism to prevent the DIU from malware and unauthorized human access. To enable remote control of the DIU and content management, the DIU needed to be integrated with another device responsible for delivering the videos to displays. To facilitate integration of DIU with the device, we developed a software and connected the two hardware leveraging our expertise in IoT and M2M.

RESULTS

The new DIU for NanoLumens Digital Signage solution succeeds in its expectations to offer next-generation of digital display experience and engagement to customers. We had a successful trial run of the DIU in many locations and have received good response from the audience. Post its launch, NanoLumens and [x]cube are looking forward to bring the same features and capabilities to TV screens.  Another interesting challenge in the offing!
